Three days leaning into what Holland does best for couples — quiet mornings at Holland State Park, afternoon tastings at New Holland Brewing, dinner on Eighth Street, and sunset walks along the pier with the red lighthouse. No crowds, no agenda, just a genuinely charming lakeside town.
Holland is an easy 2.5-hour drive from Chicago or Detroit. Arrive mid-afternoon, drop bags, and let the town work on you. The downtown is walkable and genuinely pleasant — independent shops, good coffee, and a pace that slows you down without trying.
Butch's is the best date-night restaurant in Holland proper — white tablecloths, exceptional wine list, and classic American cuisine done well. The Chilean sea bass and the filet are reliable anchors. Good cocktail program too. It's been here since 1987 and it shows in the best way. Reservations recommended on weekends.
The Haworth is Holland's boutique hotel answer — affiliated with Hope College but operates independently with proper service, a restaurant on-site, and a location walking distance to everything on Eighth Street. Rooms are well-appointed and the service is attentive without being fussy. Request upper floors for better views.
Day two is for the lakeshore. Sunrise at Big Red is worth the early alarm — the light on the red lighthouse over Lake Michigan is genuinely one of the better views in the Midwest. Saugatuck is 15 minutes south and gives the afternoon a completely different energy.
Drive to the north pier entrance before sunrise. Walk the pier — about a quarter mile — and watch the sun come up over Lake Michigan with the lighthouse in frame. It's cold in May, chilly in June, and perfect in July-August. Park on N Shore Dr before the state park entrance to avoid the day-use fee at this hour. Bring coffee.
Saugatuck is 15 minutes south on Blue Star Highway and it's one of the best art towns in the Midwest — serious galleries, dune climbing, the chain-pulled ferry across the Kalamazoo River, and Oval Beach, consistently ranked among the best freshwater beaches in the country. The Mt. Baldhead dune climb is free and gives a view over the harbor and lake worth every step.
Everyday People is a Saugatuck institution — casual, farm-forward menu, excellent fish dishes, good wine. Lower-key than the resort restaurants but higher quality. The outdoor seating area is the best in town. No reservations, so arrive early.
Last morning is low-key — brewery visit, a walk through the tulip gardens one more time if you're in season, and a relaxed exit via Blue Star Highway instead of the freeway.
New Holland's original location is on 8th Street and it's where the serious tasting happens. Dragon's Milk is the flagship bourbon barrel stout — rich, bourbon-forward, 11% ABV, basically a dessert. The Mad Hatter IPA is more sessionable. They also make their own Knickerbocker gin and a solid whiskey line that doesn't get enough attention.
If heading south toward Chicago or Kalamazoo, take Blue Star Highway (M-89/US-31 business route) instead of the freeway. It runs through Saugatuck, Douglas, South Haven, and Benton Harbor with farm stands, orchard views, and Lake Michigan glimpses the whole way. South Haven is a good coffee-and-stretch stop halfway. Add 45 minutes; worth every one.
