Seven days covering every major neighborhood, the best restaurants, the art scene, a day in the Keys, and the nightlife you're always hearing about.
Ocean Drive Art Deco walk in the morning, beach in the afternoon, Cuban food for dinner. This sets the tone.
Don't rent a car if you're staying in South Beach — you won't use it and the parking is $40–60/day. Do rent for day 4 (Keys) and day 6 (Coconut Grove). Car rentals are cheaper off-airport at Enterprise or Hertz locations in Brickell.
Ian Schrager's hotel in the restored Miami Beach EDITION — rooftop pool, nightclub in the basement (Basement), bowling alley, and a spa. Best hotel for a week-long stay if you want South Beach access without the zoo of the northernmost section. Rates $350–700/night.
The largest private contemporary art collection in the US — 1,000+ works in a converted drug enforcement agency warehouse in Allapattah. Free for Miami residents; $20 for visitors. More interesting than many large museums.
Drive south on US-1 — Key Largo is 50 minutes from Miami, Key West is 3.5 hours. Even getting just to Key Largo for snorkeling at John Pennekamp State Park is worth the drive. The transition from Miami highway to Florida Keys two-lane is significant.
Japanese izakaya on Brickell waterfront — the robata-grilled black cod and the wagyu beef with wafu sauce are the two dishes worth ordering. High-energy, expensive, and the view of Brickell at night is Miami at its most cinematic.
Barnacle Historic State Park in Coconut Grove — the 1891 pioneer homestead of Ralph Munroe, the most interesting thing in Coconut Grove. Tours run on specific days. Evening dinner at Glass & Vine in Peacock Park, outdoor tables overlooking the bay.
Miami International Airport is one of the most chaotic in the US. Check-in lines, TSA, and the walk to concourses all take longer than expected. Give yourself 2.5 hours for domestic, 3 hours for international. Precheck is worth it.
