Two days hitting Art Deco South Beach, Wynwood Walls, Little Havana, and the restaurants that make Miami worth the flight.
Ocean Drive in the morning before the crowd arrives, beach in the afternoon, dinner on Lincoln Road. The Art Deco Historic District is the most concentrated collection of 1930s architecture in the world.
The Miami Design Preservation League runs guided tours of the Art Deco Historic District every Saturday morning (10:30 AM, $35/person) and Thursday evenings. The self-guided tour using their app is free. Either way, Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue are the core — look up at the neon and the eyebrows above the windows.
The Cuban institution on Calle Ocho in Little Havana — everyone's been here, everyone should go. The ropa vieja, black beans and rice, and a cortadito to finish. Counter seating in the bakery section is fastest. Cash accepted.
The beach is between the hotels and the Atlantic — public access at every block on Ocean Drive. The best stretch is around 10th–15th Streets. The water is warm but not particularly clear. Beach chairs and umbrellas run $15–25 through the hotel or from beach vendors.
Nikkei (Japanese-Peruvian) on Miami Beach — the tiradito and the black cod miso are the best dishes. Rooftop bar has the better view; the main dining room is the better food experience. Loud on weekends; reserve in advance.
The restaurants on Ocean Drive are largely tourist traps with inflated prices and mediocre food. They exist for the Art Deco backdrop. Eat one block west on Collins or Washington Avenue — same architecture, better value. The exceptions are a few breakfast spots at the north end.
Uber is your primary tool. South Beach is walkable within itself. The Metromover (free) handles downtown Brickell. The Miami Beach local buses run on Collins Ave and Washington Ave. Do not rent a car if staying in South Beach.
Wynwood Walls in the morning (arrives before noon to beat the Instagram lines), Little Havana for lunch and a cigar, Bayside for the afternoon, and a final dinner in Brickell.
Open-air museum of street murals commissioned from world-famous graffiti artists. Free to walk through. The surrounding blocks have expanded to dozens more murals and galleries. Saturday has the most foot traffic; go early or on a weekday.
