Four days — Dollywood, the national park, mountain coaster, and the attractions that are actually worth the money.
Arrive, check in, and do the Gatlinburg strip in the evening — the fudge shops, Ripley's Aquarium, and the Space Needle observation tower are all the touristy stuff that kids genuinely enjoy.
Best aquarium in the Tennessee/NC/VA mountain region — the shark walkthrough tunnel and the penguin cove are the hits. Budget 2.5 hours. $30/adult, $20/child. Book online to save $3–5.
Summer and fall weekends on the Parkway between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg can mean 30+ minutes for a 7-mile drive. Use the Pigeon Forge Trolley ($0.50/ride) to avoid parking in Gatlinburg. Or plan activities that keep you away from the Parkway between noon and 6 PM.
TYS (Knoxville) is 45 min. Asheville Regional (AVL) is 90 min over the mountains — a more scenic drive but add time for mountain roads. Nashville BNA is 3.5 hours — don't fly there for a Pigeon Forge trip.
Family resort with a large indoor/outdoor waterpark, multiple pool areas, and a central Parkway location. The waterpark is included with the room. Good for families where the kids need a pool day mixed in with the activities. Rates $150–300/night.
The whole day. Lightning Rod, Wild Eagle, the mystery mine, and the water rides in summer. Evening show at the Celebrity Theater.
All day at Dollywood — rides in the morning, craft village midday, shows in the afternoon. The Wings of America bald eagle program is free with admission and excellent.
The most-hiked trail in the most-visited national park in the US for a reason — the 2.6-mile round trip to Laurel Falls is paved, beautiful, and ends at the most photographed waterfall in the Smokies. Good for kids 4 and up. Arrive before 9 AM for the parking lot.
Anakeesta is a mountain village with a zip line, tree canopy walk, and alpine coaster. The mountain coaster (wheeled cart that descends on a rail) is 15 minutes of genuine excitement for kids 3+. Views from the top over the Smokies are excellent. Tramway up from Gatlinburg.
Final morning — 5:30 AM wakeup and into Cades Cove at dawn. Black bears are most active at dawn and dusk; white-tailed deer are everywhere. The 11-mile loop takes 90 minutes without stops, 3+ hours with the wildlife sightings you'll get.
