The quieter side of the Smokies. Wears Valley Road bypasses the strip entirely and puts you at Tremont and Cades Cove with almost no crowds. Built for people who want mountains, not Parkway traffic.
Skip the Parkway completely. Take Hwy 321 west from Pigeon Forge into Wears Valley — a pastoral mountain valley with almost no tourism infrastructure. This is how locals access the western side of the park.
Hwy 321 through Wears Valley is 12 miles of farmland, old barns, and mountain views that look nothing like Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. Drive slowly. The valley sits at the foot of Blanket Mountain and is one of the most photogenic rural drives in the Smokies region.
A Gatlinburg institution since 1976 — you walk through the kitchen to reach your table above the river. Known for its legendary salad bar and USDA choice steaks cooked to order. Nothing fancy about the decor; everything's right about the food.
The two best kept-secret areas of the park from the Wears Valley side. Tremont is a deep-hollow research station with old-growth forest and no crowds. Cades Cove is a wildlife loop most people approach from Gatlinburg — from Wears Valley, you beat the traffic.
The most iconic breakfast in Gatlinburg — open since 1960, line out the door every morning. Worth the wait. The sweet potato pancakes and the wild blueberry stack are the moves. Closes at 3pm; this works for a late lunch if the Cades Cove loop runs long.
A flat, 5.5-mile round-trip trail along a clear mountain stream through old-growth hemlocks — one of the most peaceful hikes in the entire park. The Tremont Environmental Education Center trailhead is rarely crowded even in peak season. Beautiful for fall color.
