Six days using Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg as a base for the complete national park experience — major hikes, Clingmans Dome, Cades Cove, and the waterfall circuit.
Get to the cabin or hotel, drive through Gatlinburg to the park entrance, and do the short walk to the Sugarlands Visitor Center to get the trail conditions update.
As of 2024, several trailheads in GSMNP require a reservation ($2/vehicle) during peak season (May–October, Friday–Sunday). The reservation system is through recreation.gov. Laurel Falls, Alum Cave, and Rainbow Falls are included. Book 2 weeks out.
Historic Gatlinburg B&B with mountain views and a proper sit-down breakfast. Walk to the park entrance. Rates $130–200/night. Better base for hikers than the resort hotels on the Parkway.
The 11-mile round trip to LeConte Lodge via Alum Cave Trail is the premier day hike in the Smokies. The bluff, the arch, and the views from the summit are each worth the mile that leads to them. Start by 7 AM — it takes 5–7 hours with stops.
Drive to the Clingmans Dome parking area (arrives 1 hour before sunrise) and hike the half-mile paved path to the observation tower. On clear mornings you can see 100+ miles. The high point of the Appalachian Trail at 6,643 feet. Note: Clingmans Dome Road closes December–April.
Cades Cove wildlife loop in the morning, then Abrams Falls Trail (5 miles round trip, moderate) in the afternoon — the most powerful waterfall in the park. Get to the Cades Cove parking by 7 AM.
The Smokies have the highest density of black bears in the eastern US. Standard rules apply: don't approach, don't leave food out, and if a bear approaches you, make noise and stand your ground. Bear spray is legal in the park. Seeing a bear from the Cades Cove road is common; encountering one on trail is less so but prepare accordingly.
After 4 days of hiking, Dollywood is actually the right call — a day of easy walking and rides. The craft village and the shows.
Final morning — Rainbow Falls Trail (5.4 miles round trip) is the highest waterfall in the park reached by a maintained trail. Go early, leave by noon. 45 minutes to TYS.
