The most rewarding hike in Great Smoky Mountains NP for the effort — 4.4 miles round trip to a giant alum-coated bluff arch. The trail parallels Alum Cave Creek through old-growth forest. Go early morning (7–8 AM) to get parking.
Ole Smoky Distillery in Gatlinburg is the first federally licensed distillery in Tennessee. The free tasting (5 samples) covers the moonshine range from straight white lightnin' to apple pie. The Holler (their main building) has live music on weekends.
Great Smoky Mountains NP is the only major national park with no entrance fee. It's 5 minutes from the Parkway strip. Most Pigeon Forge visitors never enter it. The park has 800 miles of trails, 2,000+ species of plants, and the largest old-growth temperate forest in North America east of the Rockies.
Pottery gallery and café in the Arrowmont School of Arts complex — fresh salads and sandwiches for lunch, surrounded by working pottery studios. A pleasant contrast to the Parkway tourist strip.
Dollywood is different in the evening — the craft village closes but the shows in the covered theaters are all-ages entertainment done correctly. Dolly's original content is authentic. Friday and Saturday nights have fireworks.
