Dollywood, mountain music, and Appalachian heritage
Dollywood is legitimately one of the best theme parks in the country — the rides are good but the craft demonstrations, food, and live gospel and bluegrass are what make it special.
Buy before you go — gate prices are steep. Wildfire, Lightning Rod, and Mystery Mine are the top coasters. The Festival of Nations runs April-June with international performers.
The Gatlinburg Bypass is free and cuts 20 minutes off the drive. Locals use it exclusively in July and August. The bypass entrance is at the north edge of town near traffic light 3.
Walk the Gatlinburg Arts and Crafts Community — 8 miles of studios and galleries along a loop road. The largest community of independent artisans in the US. Go early before the bus tour crowd.
Over 100 working studios and shops. Look for woodcarvers, weavers, and leather workers doing actual production work. No mall-quality imports — everything is made on site.

The most visited waterfall in the Smokies — 2.6 miles round trip on a paved trail. Good for families. The Sugarlands Visitor Center has the best introduction to the park history.
A 80-foot two-part waterfall connected by a swimming hole at the base. The paved trail is stroller accessible for most of the route. Go before 9am — it gets crowded fast.
The Titanic Museum Attraction is genuinely well done — not a tourist trap. The Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Show is cheesy but kids love it. Pick one and hit the road after lunch.
Apple butter biscuits arrive with every meal. Fried chicken, country ham, and apple cider. One of the few genuinely local restaurants in a strip saturated with chains.
