Two days — Dollywood both days with different sections each day, the Old Mill District for dinner, and a sunrise drive through Cades Cove.
Arrive at Dollywood when the gates open. The coasters (Lightning Rod, Wild Eagle) have the longest waits — do them first. The craft village in the back is worth 90 minutes; the dulcimer makers and glassblowers are real.
Lightning Rod is the world's fastest wooden roller coaster — 0 to 45 mph in 2 seconds via a hydraulic launch. Wild Eagle is the headliner steel coaster with a wing seat that puts you completely over the edge. Both have 45–90-minute waits without TimeSaver; first-thing rides have 15 minutes.
The Dollywood TimeSaver pass ($75–95/person on top of admission) gives you one skip-the-line use per major ride. In June–August, this is the difference between riding 4 coasters and riding 8. In the shoulder season (May, September), you don't need it.
TYS to Pigeon Forge is 45 minutes on I-40 east and then Hwy 66. No traffic in the morning; bumper-to-bumper in July and August on the Parkway between noon and 6 PM. Leave before 10 AM or after 7 PM.
Reliable mid-tier option — hot breakfast included, indoor pool, 5 minutes from Dollywood. Rates $80–160/night depending on season. Book early for summer weekends.
If summer: Splash Country waterpark next to Dollywood is included in some combo tickets. If fall or spring: drive Cades Cove loop in the national park — sunrise is best, wildlife is most active in the first hour of light.
The 11-mile Cades Cove loop road in Great Smoky Mountains NP is one of the best wildlife drives in the eastern US. White-tailed deer, black bears, wild turkey, and coyotes in a historic valley with preserved cabins. Wednesday and Saturday mornings are car-free (bikes and horses only). Arrive at dawn.
Old-school catfish and hush puppies on the Parkway — the all-you-can-eat catfish platter is $18 and genuinely good. One of the few restaurants in Pigeon Forge that isn't a chain or a tourist trap.
