Four days mixing the estuary, beach, snorkeling day trip, and the colonial town — active enough for kids, calm enough for parents.
Land, get to the hotel, and decompress at the beach. The San José hotel zone beach has calm water compared to the Pacific side — good for kids. Evening at the plaza watching the fountain and grabbing ice cream.
The airport is 10 minutes from downtown. Pre-arrange a hotel shuttle or grab an authorized taxi from the official stand. Do not get in unmarked cabs.
Boutique hotel one block from the plaza with a pool, palapa bar, and genuinely friendly service. Family rooms available. The location is perfect — you can walk everywhere downtown. Rates ~$180–280/night.
Estuary in the morning while it's cool, beach in the afternoon while the kids still have energy, dinner at a place with a kids menu on the plaza.
The estuary has a free boardwalk and free entry. Bring binoculars if you have them — the blue herons are impossible to miss even without optics. Kids like the giant iguanas that sun themselves on the trail edges.
If your trip falls between November and April, book a whale watching tour out of Cabo San Lucas (30 min away). Gray and humpback whales use the Bay of Banderas as a nursery. You'll see them. Tours run ~$60/adult, 3 hours.
June–October is hurricane season in Baja. The weather is usually fine but you can get rained out. Shoulder season (May, November) is cheaper and almost as good as high season. Avoid August–September if you have flexibility.
Early departure for the national park — the drive is 90 minutes each way on mostly paved road. Bring snacks, water, and reef-safe sunscreen. The park prohibits non-reef-safe products.
Day trip to Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, 1.5 hours east of San José. One of the healthiest coral reefs in the Pacific — you'll see large schools of jack, rays, and if lucky, bull sharks in the distance. Book through a tour operator (~$80–100/adult, $50 kids). Worth every peso.
Last morning: farmers market at the plaza (Saturday) or street market any day, then a final taco before the airport run. The flight home is 10 minutes from downtown.
Saturday organic market on the plaza — local produce, artisan food stalls, tamales, and fresh juice. Runs 8 AM – 2 PM. Good last-morning stop before the airport.
