Two days in the colonial town — Thursday Art Walk, estuary kayak, rooftop mezcal, and real Mexican food without the tourist markup.
San José's Thursday Art Walk (Nov–Jun) turns the 11-block art district into an outdoor gallery crawl. Even on other nights the galleries are worth a walk. The town plaza is the real center of life here — locals eat paletas and kids run around while mariachis compete for tips.
Street taco counter one block from the plaza. The carne asada is the move — order by weight, add nopales if they have them. ~120–150 pesos for a full meal. Locals eat here, not the tourist spots on the plaza itself.
The gallery district runs along Obregón and cross streets between the plaza and Zaragoza. Galería de Ida Victoria is the strongest contemporary space. Most galleries have free wine on Art Walk Thursday evenings. Even without the walk, the district is worth 45 minutes.
Outstanding tacos in the heart of San José del Cabo. Gluten-free tortillas available, and the vegetarian and vegan options are actually good — not an afterthought. The al pastor and fish tacos are the move. Casual, affordable, and genuinely local. Don't skip the agua de horchata.
The airport is literally 10 minutes from downtown San José. Skip the prepaid shuttle desks inside — walk outside the terminal, grab an authorized taxi from the official stand (~$20 USD fixed rate to downtown). Uber works and is cheaper if you have signal.
The Estero San José is one of the only freshwater estuaries on the Baja Peninsula — 200+ bird species, mangroves, and zero tourist crowds. After the birds, the hotel zone beach is walkable and has no vendors hassling you.
Kayak rental outfitters set up near the estuary entrance most mornings. The paddle takes you through mangrove tunnels into a lagoon full of herons, egrets, and roseate spoonbills if you're lucky. 2-hour rental is enough. ~$30–40 USD.
Farm-to-table restaurant on a working organic farm on the outskirts of town. Chef Javier Plascencia is the real deal. Lunch is more casual than dinner and about 30% cheaper. Worth the Uber out.
The San José hotel zone beach is notably calmer than Cabo — fewer vendors, no ATV tours launching from the sand. The beach between the Barceló and Hyatt is open to the public and rarely crowded before noon.
